In 1963, the neighborhood was changing and homes were being developed. Families were moving in and becoming a tight, cohesive neighborhood.

By 1968, Audubon Gardens wanted a formal organization to come together as a neighborhood and the Audubon Gardens Neighborhood Association was born. It was originally a men's organization. One of their biggest projects was to create Wes Montgomery Park. Wes Montgomery had recently died and the residents wanted to memorialize him in Indianapolis. "He was a good guy," says local neighborhood historian, Ms. Marcella Taylor. There was an opportunity to memorialize him. There was space, wooded land, and nothing was being done with it. The City proposed apartment for the space, but the neighborhood residents wanted something more. Local leaders from the neighborhood worked together to propose the park and the City officials were receptive to this proposal for the park. Wes Montgomery Park was completed around 1970 with a swimming pool, tennis courts, 2 basketball courts, and 3 baseball diamonds and quickly became a community hub.
